THIS YEAR'S WINNER

Lucan Sarsfields, Dublin.

Lucan Sarsfields, founded in 1886, can claim with justification and pride to being one of the oldest clubs in Dublin. We were involved in the Senior Championship of 1892 and the club has fielded football, hurling and camogie teams ever since. The club has come a long way since then and has 1,600 members and fields 62 teams. An impressive clubhouse provides a gym, function room, bar, offices and dressing rooms for our members. The club has a floodlit hurling wall and three pitches and is currently constructing a state of the art all weather playing surface. The club lotto, golf classic and local sponsorship provide vital fundraising. You can buy the club lottery tickets online thanks to our excellent website. The 'Sar's Army' of volunteers use a number of innovative fundraising techniques. Fundraisers such as the recent 'Battle of the Parishes' day, where members played against each other and 'Sars Stars', an internal juvenile talent show also provide much needed funding. A huge ambition was realised when senior status in hurling was achieved in 2005. The club has progressed on all fronts, winning camogie's All Ireland Division 1 Feile title, Dublin U-21 titles in hurling and football and reaching the semi-finals in senior hurling for the past two years. The club has provided Dublin with numerous underage stars and Paul Casey and Stephen O'Shaughnessy represent the Dubs' senior footballers, while John Mc Caffrey, Peter Kelly, Mick May and Kevin O'Reilly represent the hurlers. John Mc Caffrey has also represented his province and won a railway cup medal with Leinster. Our club also provides mentors and selectors for various Dublin development teams. Numerous charitable events are held in the clubhouse including the Annual Lions Club GAA Colours event and the Vincent de Paul Table Quiz. In addition, Fachtna ÔDoc' Clandillon, a member of Lucan Sarsfields has set up a charity called Nagarhope, which aims to provide hope and education for the poor in Nepal. Nagarhope, a registered charity in both Ireland and Nepal runs a number of fundraisers every year in the club to raise much needed funds to help children in Nepal to get an education. Our senior members have not forgotten the grass roots and are involved in coaching and mentoring underage teams. The senior captain John Mc Caffrey is a Games Promotion Officer and coaches full time in the local schools. Lucan has become a culturally diverse community. The ethnic diversity is embodied by Lucan's teams, which include players from Bangladesh, Moldova and Nigeria. A recruitment drive in local primary schools included brochures which were printed in Cantonese, Polish, Russian, Urdu, Romanian and English. Our camogie section also ran a 'social inclusion day' and 130 girls from 27 different countries attended. This training camp with 2 time All Ireland winner Nicky English will give our team that extra boost to finally achieve the Holy Grail and lift the Dublin Senior Hurling Championship.
